Dr. Steven Kitchens conducts research focused on the ecology, transmission, and control of Salmonella in animal production systems, integrating microbiology, genomics, bioinformatics, and bacteriophage biology. His work investigates how Salmonella persists and spreads among livestock, poultry, and their environments, with the goal of identifying factors that contribute to pathogen transmission and contamination. He uses whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses to characterize pathogen populations, track transmission pathways, and improve disease surveillance. The program will cover current a One Health approach of Salmonella with current ways to find methods to assist in preventing the spread to humans and animals in a veterinary environment.
